Module 5

Step 5: Embedded Rimes

There are word cards included in your Magic Rime set. They are divided (or should be divided) into two sets. One set is words with a single ending, the other set has words with two endings (like stutt-er-ing).

1.       Begin with the single ending set.  (Do not use the multiple ending set until you have taught students the  rules for words with multiple endings and practiced Magic Rime with multiple endings. More on that later.)

2.       Show the word to the class or group.

3.       Students identify the Rime embedded in the word, then read the word. For the word stutter, students would say “ut-ut-ut, stutter.”

Scaffolding Embedded Rimes: If students struggle, break the task into smaller steps.

Tier 2 Scaffold – if students struggle, begin here:

·         Cover all but the rime

·         Have the students read the rime

·         Uncover the whole word

·         Have students read the word

Tier 3 Scaffold - if students STILL struggle:

·         Cover all but the rime

·         Have students read the rime

·         Uncover the onset

·         Have students read the onset with the rime

·         Uncover the ending

·         Have students read the whole word

·         As students become confident with the Tier 3 Scaffold, move them to the Tier 2 Scaffold and then to the regular Embedded Rime activity.
