Once you feel you have adequately determined the child's comprehension, rank it using a rubric from 1-3.

  • 1 = Poor comprehension
  • 2 = Adequate comprehension
  • 3 = Complete comprehension

The table above gives a few descriptors for each category.  If the child's comprehension is a 1, this is NOT the child's Instructional level, and you must read an easier book with the child. Remember, reading is all about understanding what you read!
