Ways to refuse.

Sometimes we all feel powerless to say no to something that we don't want to do. This is especially true  with young people.  They feel a strong need to belong and are afraid of being rejected if they don't go along.  It is easier to make good decisions and stick to them once you learn to take action.

WAYS TO REFUSE

There are many different ways of refusing to go along with the pressure to use alcohol and other drugs or to do things you don't want to do.

  • NO THANKS....
  • GIVE A REASON
  • REPEAT YOURSELF ( repeat the same phrase over and over)
  • WALK AWAY
  • AVOID THE SITUATION
  • IGNORE THEM
  • CHANGE THE SUBJECT
  • REVERSE THE PRESSURE
  • SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE
  • STRENGTH IN NUMBERS *

Everyone has to face situations that makes us feel uncomfortable from time to time and we must decide what to do.   One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to become part of a group of peers with the same values and interests.  It is easier to refuse to do things if your friends agree with and support your position than it is to say no alone.  Choose friends who feel the same way you do about what is right or wrong.

But remember: only YOU know what is best for you.  No matter what, stick to your own principles.
