You have learned the basic techniques for refusing involvement in alcohol, tobacco other drugs and sexual behavior.  Building on that knowledge, you need to learn the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive behavior.  Understanding and practicing assertive behavior helps you develop the skills needed to stand up for what you believe is right.

Being assertive can give young people personal satisfaction, increase self-esteem and earn them the respect from their peers and others,  It is important to understand that the way one reponds to various requests or offers will either add to or subtract from ones ability to stand up for personal beliefs and values.

 

  1.  Passive behavior:  Giving in or giving up.  Passive body language includes hesitation, downcast eyes, poor posture and soft speech.
  2.  Aggressive behavior: Trying to get what one wants through intimidating or even openly threatening others.  Agressive body language includes glaring eyes, hand waving, threatening gestures and quick or loud speech.
  3.  Assertive behavior: Standing up for one's rights: using logic and reason while listening to and respecting the ideas of others.  Assertive body language includes direct eye contact, good posture, and a firm even voice level.

 

ASSERTIVE TECHNIQUES

  1. Say no/ take a stand.   State your position.  For Example " No, you can't borrow my book"
  2. Assert your rights.   example  " It gets on my nerves when you ask me to smoke with you.  I wish you;d stop."
  3. Use appropriate body language.  Use a firm tone of voice.  Don't whipsre or mumble: speak clearly and confidently.
  4. Make eye contact. Don't look away or down at the floor:  look the person directly in the eyes.
  5. use appropriate facial expressions.   For instance, don't smile while you are telling someone that you are angry.
